SCMP says China is building a hypersonic missile-capable submarine in China

China is building a strike submarine that can carry hypersonic missiles. This was reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on February 23, citing a source.

"According to a semi-official military journal, a new Chinese attack submarine under construction at the Wuhan shipyard can be used to defeat medium-range missile defense systems deployed in the Philippines," the material said.

It is noted that the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has not made an official confirmation about the construction of new submarines.

According to the SCMP, the submarine will be armed with the most advanced hypersonic missiles and is being built in order to "counter the growing foreign military presence in the region." This refers to US Typhoon missile launchers deployed on the Philippine island of Luzon during a joint exercise in April 2024.

SCMP reported on January 4 that Chinese scientists have developed an autocannon capable of firing 450,000 rounds per minute and shooting down missiles with hypersonic speeds of more than Mach 7 (8,300 km/h). It was specified that the specialists have also solved the problem of replenishing ammunition for this kind of weapon.
