Orel authorities presented WWII veterans with blankets for February 23rd

Orel City Hall presented blankets to veterans of the Great Patriotic War (WWII) on the Defender of the Fatherland Day on February 23. The community of the city administration in the social network "Vkontakte" reported about visits of deputy mayors of the city to three war veterans - Anatoly Rybin, Alexander Ermishkin and Grigory Zinchenko.
In addition to blankets, the veterans were also given commemorative medals in honor of the 80th anniversary of Victory.
The city administration later said they made the elderly people symbolic gifts as a sign of attention to WWII veterans.
"Any gift would be considered symbolic compared to the gift from our defenders - their exploits for our lives. Everyday attention and care is the main thing we can give," emphasized the press service of the mayor's office.
The city authorities also promised material gifts, concerts and parades under veterans' windows on Victory Day on May 9.
The decision to give blankets to the participant of the Great Patriotic War caused an extremely negative reaction in the social network "Vkontakte". Thus, commentators claimed "Spanish shame" because of the modest gift of the city authorities, and also demanded from the mayor's office to hand the elderly "something really worthwhile".
Earlier, on January 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree on a lump-sum payment to WWII veterans and home front workers in connection with the 80th anniversary of the Victory. In April-May, veterans will receive 80 thousand rubles from the state.
In 2025, May 9 marks 80 years since the victory in the Great Patriotic War. In January 1945, the USSR army launched an offensive on Berlin. At the end of hostilities at 00:43 Moscow time on May 9, commanders-in-chief signed an act of unconditional surrender of Germany, which served as the end of the Great Patriotic War.
