German poll confirms CDU/CSU likely to win election
The conservative Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc led by Friedrich Merz is likely to win the German elections. This conclusion was made by the Bild newspaper on February 22, citing polling data.
The survey, conducted jointly with the INSA Institute, showed that 29.5% of respondents are ready to vote for the conservative bloc. While the party needs to overcome the 30% mark to form the next federal government.
At the same time, only 15% of respondents are ready to vote for their rivals, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This is more than 10 percentage points more than in 2021.
The other contenders - the Alternative for Germany (AdG) party - have 21% of voter support, the Left Party (Die Linke) - 7.5%. And the Green Party is gaining just 12.5%. Early elections in the country will be held on Sunday, February 23.
Earlier, on February 20, Alexander Kamkin, associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation , told Izvestia that the CDU/CSU bloc is more likely to win the parliamentary elections in Germany on February 23. The expert added that a coalition government should be expected as a result of the vote. A survey by the INSA Institute showed that 30% of German citizens are ready to vote for the CDU in the parliamentary elections on February 23.
On February 19, Scholz ruled out the formation of a coalition with the "Union of Sarah Wagenknecht - for Reason and Justice" (SSV) and the Left Party. According to him, an alliance with either of the two parties is not negotiable. For his part, Merz has repeatedly denied any statements about possible cooperation between the CDU and the AdH.
In December 2024, the Bundestag revoked the confidence of the Scholz government. Then German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier endorsed February 23, 2025 as a possible date for early parliamentary elections.
