German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed confidence that he will remain in office after the upcoming elections. He said this during a campaign event in his Potsdam constituency on February 22.

"I am quite sure that in the end many people will decide to vote for the SPD - for the constituencies in the first vote and for the SPD as a whole in the second vote. This will give us enough strength so that the government under my leadership can continue its work," Scholz said.

Early elections to the Bundestag will be held on February 23.

Before that, on February 5, the media reported on the attempt of the SPD leadership to dissuade Scholz to go to the elections. It was noted that party members have concerns that if Scholz is re-nominated, the SPD will not win early federal elections. However, the chancellor insisted on approving his candidacy.

Earlier, on February 2, a poll conducted by the Institute for Public Opinion Research INSA, showed that in Germany 32% of citizens surveyed support the creation of a coalition of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and SPD in the Bundestag after the elections on February 23, 2025.
