The Romanian opposition has collected more than 200 thousand signatures in favor of the independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. This was announced by the leader of deputies of the right-wing party Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) Mihai Enake at a meeting in Bucharest on February 22.

"AUR has collected more than 200,000 signatures in support of Calin Georgescu's candidacy," Mediafax.ro quoted him as saying.

Adrian Ohaci, one of the AUR activists, said the party will continue to fight for Georgescu's victory, which he said was stolen from the people. He said it was important to show unity and continue to support "the only candidate who can restore Romania's normal image."

Georgescu himself, who arrived at the rally on crutches, thanked the protesters for their support, calling Romanians the bravest and greatest people.

Repeated elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.

The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official data, Georgescu was leading with 22.94% of the vote. However, on November 28, Romania's Constitutional Court (CC) demanded that the republic's Central Election Commission (CEC) recalculate the results of the first round.

On December 6, the CC annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. The decision was taken after local intelligence services declassified a document on the illegal financing of Georgescu's election campaign, as well as the fact that Russia allegedly influenced his campaign through social networks.

On January 21 of this year, it became known that Georgescu was again leading in the polls among citizens of the country.
