After Moscow and Washington held bilateral talks in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine found itself in an extremely uncomfortable position. This was stated by retired US Marine Corps Colonel and analyst Steve Genyard on February 22.

As the military analyst noted, such "high-stakes" negotiations are a rather "extraordinary time in history."

"The bad outcome [for Ukraine] would be a treaty in which Kiev gives Washington access to minerals, hoping that U.S. economic involvement will be a deterrent to Russia," ABC News quoted Genyard as saying.

The expert also concluded that the US will not allow Kiev to join NATO because Washington wants to shift responsibility for Ukraine's security to Europe.

"Washington's relationship with Europe has been changing for a long time. The U.S. has been warning Europe since the administration of [34th U.S. President Dwight] Eisenhower that it expects European countries themselves to be active, and to increase their defense spending. Washington has long wanted to make Europe the leader of the alliance," Genyard concluded.

Earlier, on February 22, Reuters reported that the US may cut off access to the Starlink satellite system in Ukraine, which belongs to US billionaire Ilon Musk's company SpaceX. The loss of Starlink would be a huge blow, the media source concluded.

US President Donald Trump said on February 21 that he had warned Ukraine of problems if it refused to sign the rare earth minerals deal. Later, the head of state expressed doubts about Kiev's resources.

At the same time, Trump's special envoy for special assignments Richard Grenell said that Americans are disappointed with the power of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to him, the citizens of the United States are upset because most of the aid from Washington is gone.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the USA and Ukraine might sign an agreement on rare-earth metals on Saturday, February 22.
