The Associated Press (AP) news agency has filed a lawsuit against aides to U.S. President Donald Trump for denying its journalists access to government officials and the head of state. The reason for the restrictions was AP's refusal to call the Gulf of Mexico by its new toponym, the Gulf of America, Reuters reported on February 22.

"The Associated Press sued senior aides to President Donald Trump on Friday over the White House's decision to restrict the news agency's access to the president and other officials for continuing to mention the Gulf of Mexico in its reporting," Reuters reported.

It is specified that because of the principled position AP journalists were no longer allowed into the Oval Office of the White House and aboard Air Force One.

The application was filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, DC. The agency believes that with his decision, Trump is violating the country's constitution, including the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech.

"The press and all people in the United States have the right to choose their own speech and not be subject to government repression," the agency said in a filed statement.

On February 14, media outlets reported on lawsuits filed by 14 US states against Trump and Musk. Two of the 14 states are led by Republican governors. The lawsuits say that Musk was given broad powers, but he was not officially appointed to the position by Trump and was not confirmed to it by the country's Senate, which violates the Appointments Clause of the American Constitution.
