Ice skating helps to maintain physical activity and strengthen muscles, but the risk of injury increases with age, especially after 40-50 years of age. This is due to natural changes in bone tissue, including the development of osteoporosis. This was reported to "Gazeta.Ru" on February 21 by Vitaly Skakun, orthopedic traumatologist of the highest category of the flagship center "Bud Zdorov" on Ryazansky Prospekt.

According to him, women should be especially careful after 40 years, especially during menopause, when the decline in estrogen levels leads to a decrease in bone density. This makes them more fragile and increases the risk of fractures even in small falls. Before starting skating, the doctor advises to consult with a specialist and, if necessary, undergo densitometry - a study of bone density.

Skakun noted that in men the risk of osteoporosis appears later, usually after the age of 50, but age-related changes also reduce bone strength and ligament elasticity, increasing the likelihood of injury.

"If you decide to get on skates after 40, start small: choose rinks with a quality surface or attend lessons with an instructor. Be sure to warm up before skating to warm up your muscles and ligaments. Use protection: kneepads, elbow pads and a helmet can help reduce the risk of injury. If you've already been diagnosed with osteoporosis or have suspected osteoporosis, avoid active sports that carry a risk of falls. Instead of skates it is better to choose swimming, Nordic walking or yoga", - concluded the doctor.

Earlier, on February 19, the insurance company Ingosstrakh said that hockey is the most injury-prone winter sport, it accounts for the majority of sports injuries. They are suffered by 25% of athletes.
