Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass fired the city's fire chief, Christine Crowley, because of large-scale wildfires that killed dozens of people. This was reported by ABC News on February 21.

"We know that 1,000 firefighters who could have been on duty the morning the fires broke out were sent home under Chief Crowley's supervision. Moreover, a necessary step for the investigation was for the president of the Fire Commission to order Chief Crowley to make a report on the fires. She refused to do so. This warrants her suspension," stated Bass.

Ronnie Villanueva, former Los Angeles Fire Department deputy chief of emergency management, has been named interim chief.

In addition, Bass said she did not know the weather forecast before leaving for Ghana, and the fire chief did not call to warn her. The mayor noted that Crowley or other supervisors had previously let her know of widespread changes in weather conditions.

Earlier, on February 1, it was reported that US authorities sent emails to firefighters involved in fighting wildfires in the US state of California, offering to resign at will before layoffs began.

The multiple wildfires in Los Angeles started on January 7. According to the latest data from CNN, 28 people have died as a result, and more than 16,000 hectares have been damaged by the fires. On January 14, the damage from the fires raging in California was estimated at more than $250 billion.
