UNSC adopts resolution demanding M23 to stop fighting in DR Congoo

Russia has supported the draft resolution of the UN Security Council (UNSC), according to which the rebels from the M23 group (March 23 Movement) should stop fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and withdraw their units from the country. This was reported on February 21 by the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN in its Telegram channel.
"This is an important decision for all of us and above all for the Congolese civilian population. It was adopted as a result of hard compromises and many hours of painstaking diplomatic work," said Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.
He noted that the decision should be implemented by the parties immediately.
According to the Russian envoy, hostilities in the DRC should stop and citizens should be able to return to their homes. Nebenzya said Rwanda and DR Congo should once again hold talks and decide on the terms of sustainable and long-term peace.
"Otherwise, another bloody war with colossal human casualties awaits the region," he said.
Earlier on February 18, rebels from the Rwandan-backed M23 group were consolidating their positions in the captured town of Bukavu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The escalation in DR Congo came after the government severed diplomatic relations with Rwanda and accused the country of supporting the rebels, who launched a new offensive on the town of Goma.
