Experts have identified a new fraudulent scheme of Russians on the Internet

VTB specialists have identified a new scheme of fraudsters on the Internet. Web users, suspecting that they are trying to cheat on the phone, begin to look for advice for protection on forums, but together they find resources where scammers are active. Communication in such chats turns into financial losses, said the press service of the credit institution on February 24.

As explained by experts, the user, who was previously actively called by phone scammers, begins to worry and search for information on the Internet on how to protect themselves from these attacks. People find sites with testimonials and opinions of those who have encountered various methods of deception. However, these messages can be left by the attackers themselves, who, showing a "desire to help", convince the user that he really had contact with scammers and now it is urgent to save his money. Following the instructions, the victim loses his money by transferring his savings to unknown people.

Dmitry Revyakin, Vice President of VTB, Head of the Corporate Interest Protection Division of the Security Department, advised to be attentive in any situation, on any resource and to be critical of offers, especially if they seem too favorable. He recommended to carefully read the messages and push notifications from the bank and not to pass on the codes received in them. Fraudsters can use this information to access online services and withdraw funds, including loan funds.

On January 20, it was reported that the most frequent scenario of phone fraud in 2024 was an offer to allegedly renew a contract with a telecom operator. This follows from data from the company Yandex. Also often the scammers promised to issue or increase the benefits paid, increase the size of the pension or recalculate payments taking into account the missed length of service or data.
