Russian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Andrei Kelin said on February 21 that local journalists had suggested that he seek political asylum in the United Kingdom.

"I have enough contacts with them (representatives of the British press. - Ed.) now. Here I was offered to leave my post and seek asylum in Britain," he said on air of the Rossiya 1 TV channel (VGTRK).

According to the diplomat, London intends to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia. If the British authorities change their foreign policy course - it will be difficult for them to admit to the citizens of the country in their mistakes, the Ambassador emphasized.

On the eve it was reported that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer supported the reluctance of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold elections in the country, and also expressed support after criticism from US President Donald Trump.

Before that, on February 18, The Times wrote that the UK might send its Typhoon fighter jets to Ukraine to patrol the country's airspace as part of a peacekeeping mission after the end of the conflict.
