The latest development of the Kalashnikov concern - light hand-held machine guns RPL-20 of 5.45 mm caliber - has already appeared in the special operation zone for the protection of Donbas. This was announced by the concern's chief designer Sergei Urzhumtsev at the IDEX-2025 international exhibition in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on February 21.

"I can say that machine guns are present in the special military operation zone," Urzhumtsev told TASS.

Earlier, on August 12, 2024, Urzhumtsev explained that the abbreviation RPL means "belt-fed hand-held machine gun," it weighs 5.2-5.5 kg depending on the number of cartridges, has compact dimensions and can fire intense automatic fire - about 700 rounds per minute.

This weapon is designed to support assault units and to fire from an unstable position - in confined spaces, mountainous or wooded terrain. The machine gun has received good reviews during trials with the troops.
