Political analyst assessed the likelihood of the U.S. withdrawal from the UN

TheUnited States is unlikely to withdraw from the UN, as the organization is a tool for Washington to put pressure on other countries. This was stated by Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and an American political scientist, on February 21.
Fox News television channel reported the day before that Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, had introduced a bill to terminate U.S. membership in the UN and its affiliated bodies. According to the authors, the organization does not defend the interests of Americans and does not correspond to the program of US President Donald Trump.
"The US values its seat in the UN Security Council and the fact that its territory, New York, is home to the UN headquarters. In addition, the General Assembly also meets in the US. It is a tool, a lever of pressure on other countries. The US withdrawal from the UN is not possible," he said.
According to him, the Republican Party politicians are trying to please Trump by putting forward too bold and cardinal proposals. According to Blokhin, Washington may withdraw from some UN subcommittees as the US president may consider them financially burdensome for the country. For example, Washington withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), which was more in line with the interests and main agenda of the Democratic Party, the political analyst recalled.
"The US position will be weakened if it withdraws from the UN. This is an overreach on the part of individual politicians," he concluded.
Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that it is impossible to find an alternative to the UN against the backdrop of modern challenges, despite the ineffectiveness of the organization.
On February 4, Trump told reporters that he signed an executive order to reevaluate Washington's participation in the UN and UNESCO. The document implies the withdrawal of the US from the UNHRC, as well as stopping the funding of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). He also noted the disproportionate funding of the organization. According to him, the United States invests more funds there than the other participants.
On January 20, the US president signed an executive order withdrawing the country from the World Health Organization (WHO). The Financial Times noted that thus WHO lost a significant part of funding. Thus, in 2022 and 2023, the states provided about 16% of its budget.
