Kovalchuk points to Russia's readiness to resume work at CERN

Russia is ready to resume work in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), if such a proposal is made, taking into account its priorities. This was stated by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the National Research Center (NRC) Kurchatov Institute, on February 21 on the sidelines of the Future Technologies Forum. According to him, the Russian Federation is open for cooperation with CERN, but the country now has "too much of its own business."
"We welcome [international scientific] cooperation and will try to preserve and support it," Kovalchuk said, his words reported by TASS.
In December 2024, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the cooperation agreement between Russia and CERN was terminated as of December 1.
Before that, in November, Kovalchuk recalled that the West began blocking Russian experts' access to CERN after the start of a special military operation. At the same time, they received an invitation to work at the center under certain conditions, which scientists from the Russian Federation did not accept, Kovalchuk pointed out.
The expulsion by CERN of hundreds of scientists from the Russian Federation, associated with Russian institutions, became known in mid-September. It was reported that this would happen if they did not move to scientific institutions of other countries.
