EU warns Moldova of possible suspension of European integration

Moldova's European integration into the European Union (EU) may be suspended if the upcoming parliamentary elections are not free and fair. This was stated by the head of the EU delegation in Chisinau, Janis Mazeix, on February 21.
"Moldova's European integration process may be suspended or even stopped if the parliamentary elections are not free and fair," he told reporters.
According to him, the Moldovan authorities should take a more serious approach to ensuring the transparency of the electoral process. Mazeix emphasized the need to speed up amendments to the legislation to combat electoral corruption, foreign interference, disinformation in social networks and cyberattacks.
On December 4, 2024, the press bureau of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) reported that the European Union (EU) ambassador to Moldova, Janis Mazeix, demanded that the government find any pretext and sentence to criminal punishment representatives of the Moldovan opposition.
