US President Donald Trump, speaking at the Republican Governors Association dinner in Washington on February 21, said he threatened the BRICS with tariffs of 150% for trying to create an alternative to the dollar.

"You know, the BRICS countries <...> tried to destroy our dollar. <...> They wanted to create a new currency. So when I came, the first thing I said was that any BRICS country that even mentions destroying the dollar will be subject to tariffs of 150%," he said.

At the same time, Trump believes that the BRICS countries want to put the Chinese yuan to replace the U.S. dollar.

On February 13, Trump said that the United States could impose duties of 100% on goods from BRICS countries if the organization makes attempts that carry a threat to the dollar. On January 30, Trump already talked about the introduction of such tariffs, to which Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that BRICS is not talking about creating a new currency.
