Floating marine debris is a serious problem on a global scale, and artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to partially solve this problem. Mikhail Krinitsky, a senior researcher at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and head of the Laboratory of Machine Learning in Earth Sciences at MIPT, said on Thursday, February 19.

"Our task is to put together a methodology for any steamship. It will be a high-resolution camera aimed at the surface of the water, with artificial intelligence inside. We put such cameras independently at the height of the topmost deck (17-20 or more meters)," the specialist told Radio 1.

According to the scientist, the AI reading from the cameras should be a universal technique of international level, which will allow to get rid of pollution.

"We go out to sea, on an expedition, eyeballing, the camera with AI all this time takes pictures. And where we found particles of floating debris, mark, and this will be an example for training the very model of artificial intelligence," he said.

The researcher emphasized that artificial intelligence will not be able to solve the problem with garbage to the end, because it depends on human activity.

In November 2024, the Attorney General of the American state of New York Letitia James sued PepsiCo and accused it of polluting nature with disposable packaging. The statement notes that such disposable packaging quickly begins to break down and release dangerous microplastics into the environment. The substance was also found in fish living in Lake Erie and the Buffalo River.
