There is no shortage of chips for making foreign passports and bank cards in Russia, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alikhanov said on February 20.

"No, there is no deficit," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Future Technologies Forum in Moscow.

The head of the ministry confirmed that Russian manufacturers fully provide the necessary needs in the specified parts.

Earlier, on February 16, the Main Department for Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that Russian citizens can officially have two passports, provided that one of them is biometric. The agency noted that in biometric passports, fingerprints and photo are stored in a chip sewn into one of the pages of the document.

The shortage of chips for passports validfor 10 years was reported in 2023, when there was an increased demand for such documents. The issuance of documents was temporarily suspended from February to June due to the lack of chips. The Mikron company produces these chips in Russia.
