Most pet owners go to the veterinarian when the pet has already developed symptoms of illness. But in most cases, many problems could have been prevented if the pet had been given regular preventive check-ups, veterinarian Alexander Alyasov told Izvestia. He also listed the most common pet diseases.

According to him, such examinations not only prolong life and increase the success of therapy, but also reduce the cost of treatment, because the disease is easier to prevent than to deal with its consequences.

"Animals hide pain. This is not intuitive behavior, but an evolutionary mechanism: in the wild, a weak animal becomes easy prey for other predators. Even if the pet behaves as usual, it does not mean that it does not have health problems," he emphasized.

The expert said that the most common diseases in pets, which are difficult to notice without examination, include kidney failure, heart disease, periodontal disease (deep damage to the peri-dental tissue) and arthritis.

Also, the expert added, overweight and obesity are common problems among pets.

"We should not forget that vaccination is a key aspect of preventive medicine for animals. It protects against various infectious diseases that can be dangerous for both animals and humans, such as rabies, parvovirus enteritis and viral hepatitis," Alyasov added.

The frequency of examinations, the doctor noted, should be calculated based on the age of the animal.

Animals up to a year old, summarized the expert, should undergo such examinations three or four times a year, over a year old - once a year, not counting vaccination, the elderly and with chronic diseases - at least twice a year.

Earlier, on February 15, the President of the Russian Cynological Federation Vladimir Golubev told "Izvestia" that the popular game of dog with a stick can cause poisoning, allergies and injuries. If the stick, which the pet found on the street, has been chewed by other animals before or has harmful substances on it, the dog can catch an infection.
