The media has learned about the EU's fears of the alliance's collapse

The transatlantic alliance is coming to an end, as Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump want to "destroy" Europe. Such fears were shared with Politico on February 20 by an unnamed European diplomat.
"Now we have an alliance between a Russian president who wants to destroy Europe and an American president who also wants to destroy Europe. <...> The transatlantic alliance has come to an end," his words are quoted in the text.
Another interlocutor of the publication - an anonymous high-ranking Polish official - suggested that the American leader does not actually intend to withdraw the United States from NATO or divide Europe. He said Trump wants to make Europe "take more responsibility for its security to strengthen NATO."
The article notes that the Trump administration is reevaluating Europe's place in a daunting global strategic landscape and is likely to frequently disagree with the EU on issues such as Ukraine, trade, climate and more.
The Russian and USdelegations heldtalks in Riyadh on February 18. One of the main topics was the restoration of dialog between Moscow and Washington. The parties also managed to agree on the establishment of negotiating groups on Ukraine. Representatives of the EU and Kiev were absent at the meeting.
On 17 February, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the participation of the EU countries in the negotiations on Ukraine seemed useless in the light of the current situation, as the association had repeatedly demonstrated its lack of intentions to change its position on the conflict.
