A doctor spoke about the risks of taking dietary supplements for children

Uncontrolled use of biologically active supplements (BAA) can cause harm to the body of children. This was warned by Yulia Lashkova, head of the pediatric diagnostic department of the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Health of Russia, in a conversation with "Gazeta.Ru".
According to the doctor, dietary supplements are not a universal means of treatment or recovery of the body. And if used incorrectly, they can harm the body at all.
"However, sometimes supplements can bring benefit. This primarily concerns cases of proven deficiency of any vitamin or trace element in the body. For example, if a child has a disease that leads to impaired absorption of a certain substance or to its loss. <...> Then additional consumption of deficient substances is necessary and will be beneficial," Lashkova said.
Pediatrician noted that in some cases, for example, in the absence of a drug on the market in the right form, it can be replaced by a dietary supplement. In this case, it is necessary to first consult with a doctor and get all recommendations and explanations.
"Before you start taking dietary supplements, it is important to necessarily consult a doctor, especially for children. It is also worth remembering that one should not take supplements instead of medication and one should not combine taking medication and supplements without consulting a doctor about it," the doctor warned.
If a person takes several supplements at the same time without consulting a specialist, it can increase the risk of side effects and harm to the body. The same goes for taking any one supplement at a high dosage.
"In particular, high doses of vitamin D can lead to increased calcium absorption, which in turn causes muscle pain, abdominal pain, kidney stone formation, and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Also dangerous excessive intake of calcium supplements," - said the pediatrician.
Also when consuming a course of dietary supplements, even after a doctor's recommendation, there is a risk associated with the purchase of counterfeit or spoiled products
"If there is still a need to buy a dietary supplement, it is better to go for it in a pharmacy, not on the marketplace, because in pharmacies it is less likely to encounter counterfeit products and violations of storage conditions," - concluded the expert.
February 15 Therapist Olga Chistik listed the reasons for the ineffectiveness of pain medications. According to her, compliance with the rules of taking the drug is important. These include, in particular, the time of day, the amount of the drug, the rules of eating before or after the drug and the regularity of intake. Also on January 18, Roman Malkov, a nutritionist and gastroenterologist at GASTRO CLINIC , told Izvestia that swelling can be associated with various diseases, including heart failure, kidney disease, allergic reactions, as well as a lack of protein in the blood. One of the less obvious causes is hidden food intolerance.
