EU and European Parliament agree on almost €2 bln support for reforms in Moldova

The Council of the European Union (EU) and the European Parliament (EP) have agreed to support reforms in Moldova for almost €2 billion, the official website of the European Union reported on February 19.
It is specified that the aid package to Moldova will support the country in the period from 2025 to 2027. The EU is expected to provide up to €385 million in grants and €1.5 billion in loans, with a long repayment period and favorable interest rates.
"We are determined to support Moldova on its path to EU accession, it is our duty in these turbulent times. This package will help Moldovans implement key reforms, strengthen their economy and speed up its integration into the EU single market," Polish European Affairs Minister Adam Szlapka said.
In October 2024, Moldova held a referendum on the country's European integration and presidential elections among 11 candidates. Only 9 of Moldova's 36 districts voted in favor of changing the constitution for the sake of joining the EU, while in Gagauzia more than 90% of those who voted were against European integration. On 25 October, the Moldovan Central Electoral Commission recognized the referendum as valid, approved its final results and sent them to the country's Constitutional Court for approval.
