U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth may fire generals whose views diverge from the position of President Donald Trump. This was reported by NBC News on February 19, citing representatives of the Department of Defense and Congress.

"Pentagon leadership shared with Republican members of the House and Senate a list of generals and officers who could be fired," the channel informed.

Officials said most of those on the list expressed views that Trump's allies considered politically inconsistent with the agenda or were closely associated with former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who served all four years in the administration of former US President Joe Biden.

The generals and officers are expected to be replaced with nominees for their positions who are closer to Hegseth and more in line with Trump's policy agenda.

At the same time, Trump said on February 19 that the nation's Defense Department would be one of the next targets for massive cuts as US entrepreneur Ilon Musk's Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) conducts layoffs among federal employees.
