On Friday, March 2, 1945, Soviet troops occupied the towns of Rosen, Renteguter, Schoenwald, Schoenau, Mertensdorf and the Schoenau railway station southwest of Konigsberg. About this reports the Izvestia newspaper.

"Southwest of the city of Konigsberg, our troops fought to eliminate the East Prussian enemy group. Large German forces, trapped in a small area, are stubbornly resisting. Regardless of losses, the enemy launches counterattacks with infantry units reinforced with tanks and self-propelled guns. During the day, our troops repelled over 60 counterattacks in various sectors. Breaking into the enemy's defenses, Soviet units bypass his strongholds, and then destroy the enemy garrisons," reads the publication's message dated March 2, 1945.

There were exactly 68 days left until the Great Victory.

As a result, the Soviet troops managed to capture the heavily fortified village of Schoenwald. Other units drove the Germans out of the settlement and the Schoenau railway station. The enemy only lost over 3,000 soldiers and officers killed.

"On the territory of Pomerania, northwest and west of the city of Neustettin, our troops, continuing their offensive, occupied more than 30 settlements with battles. Among them are Goldovk, Dubbertech, Klingbeck, Perzantsikh, Gissolk, and Iukhov," the newspaper said on March 2, 1945.

The material was published as part of the Izvestia special project "80 days to Victory".
