Toothache is one of the most severe and one that is difficult to get rid of. However, there are several ways that can help alleviate it before visiting a doctor. Maria Volkova, a dental surgeon and implantologist at SM-Stomatology clinic, told Izvestia about them on February 20.

The first advice the doctor gave was to apply a cold compress. Cold will dull painful sensations and restrain the growth of edema. Its impact should not exceed 20 minutes. In this case, be sure to exclude the direct impact of cold on the skin, that is, the ice should be wrapped either in a thick paper towel or cloth.

"Exclude heat exposure to the inflamed area - respectively, no heat compresses and warming in the projection of the painful tooth. This will only increase the pain and accelerate the increase in inflammatory phenomena," - said Volkova.

The dentist recommended not to forget about brushing teeth. Food residues and plaque can further aggravate painful sensations and provoke inflammation, so it is necessary to be sure to carefully conduct oral hygiene at home.

"Dental gels with anesthetics can also help. Sometimes the use of local anesthetic agents containing benzocaine or lidocaine can temporarily relieve pain," the doctor added.

According to her, useful in this regard will be and gargle with antiseptic solutions, namely - chlorhexidine solution with a concentration of 0.12, 0.15 or 0.2%. Due to the use of antiseptic reduces the number of pathogenic and opportunistic microorganisms in the oral cavity, and, consequently, it can temporarily reduce pain.

"Analgesic drugs, and more specifically, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This group includes drugs based on ibuprofen, nimesulide, coxibs and a combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol. These drugs will not only be good for pain relief, but will further have a potentiating effect on anesthesia in the dentist's chair," Volkova stressed.

Earlier, on November 29, 2024, orthodontist-dentist "SM-Stomatology", Candidate of Medical Sciences Natalia Yurchenko told "Izvestia" that improper growth of wisdom teeth can lead to serious oral health problems, including displacement of the tooth row and the development of infection. According to her, one of the most common problems is pain and discomfort.

However, she pointed out that before using medications, it is absolutely necessary to consult with the attending dentist and remember the presence of contraindications and allergic reactions.

"All these methods are temporary measures and do not replace professional treatment. Be sure to visit a dentist at the first signs of toothache for diagnosis and appropriate treatment," summarized the doctor.
