The condition of the eyes directly depends on the general health of the body, and improper nutrition can lead to deterioration of vision. This was told by ophthalmologist of the European Medical Center (EMC) Natalia Bosha on February 19 to "Gazeta.Ru".

According to her, anything that worsens the general health and condition of a person will also reduce visual acuity.

"For example, an overabundance of sweet food in the diet leads to diabetes mellitus, and it in turn contributes to the development of cataracts and diabetic changes in the retina. Fatty and salty foods increase blood pressure. This can cause vascular pathologies, hemorrhages, thrombosis and embolism of retinal vessels", - Natalia Bosha gave an example.

The ophthalmologist added that the lack of microelements lutein and zeaxanthin is the cause of malfunction of the central zone of the retina, which is responsible for visual acuity. When the amount of electrolytes - potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium - is reduced in the body, vision decreases due to disorders of the nerve pathways, interstitial edema and swelling of the lens.

Therefore, a varied and balanced diet is necessary for good eye function, she added.

Earlier, on February 14, Russian specialists developed an express test that will help to choose the appropriate treatment for people suffering from migraine. The test strip determines the level of a specific protein in the patient's tear fluid, and based on the data obtained, specialists select drugs that will help prevent and manage the pain.
