Within six months, fraudsters have launched a new system of stealing money from the accounts of Russians, using a virus program with the function of remote access to the phone. This was announced by the head of the Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiullina on February 19, noting that about 40-50% of all thefts are committed with the help of this system.
"We close one gap, fraudsters find another. Fraud remains an everyday threat and one of the most worrying for society. So, a very dangerous trend emerged in the second half of last year, the SpyNote virus with the function of remote access to the phone began to spread," - said Nabiullina at the forum "Cybersecurity in Finance".
As explained by the head of the Central Bank of Russia, the virus independently mimicry under the usual harmless programs, so that the owner of the phone immediately can not detect it.
"With its help, fraudsters watch the phone for some time and then remotely open the banking application and gut the accounts without a balance. According to our data, for the last six months, about 40-50% of the accounts are made in this way," she added.
Earlier, on February 4, cybersecurity expert Alexei Raevsky described how fraudsters spy on smartphone users. He explained that spyware (software) is difficult to detect in the phone, because most often it is disguised as some applications. These can be games, financial, stock exchange applications.
In addition, January 22, Nabiullina received an appeal from the head of the faction "Just Russia - For Truth" Sergei Mironov, in which the head of the Central Bank was asked to oblige banks to compensate the losses of citizens from fraudsters. In the document, which was read by "Izvestia", it was noted that according to statistics in the first quarter of 2024, fraudsters stole 4.3 billion rubles from citizens, the size of the losses of Russians by 8% exceeded the average rate of theft in 2023.
