The European Union (EU) countries are obliged to ensure their contribution to the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. This was reported by Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Olaf Scholz on February 18.

"It is obvious that the European Union, like the United States, must make its contribution to peace - if it is finally achieved," the Tagesschau newspaper reports his words.

This is how he commented on the bilateral talks between the Russian and US delegations in Riyadh and added that decisions should not be made without Kiev's participation. According to Scholz, Ukraine is a sovereign and democratic nation, which was opened the way to the EU.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (his term expired on May 20, 2024) said that Kiev would not accept any results of the negotiations between Russia and the United States. According to him, this is impossible without the participation of representatives of Ukraine and the EU in meetings on the topic of settlement.

Thetalks between the Russian and US delegations on February 18 in Riyadh lasted 4.5 hours. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov positively assessed the meeting, and US President Donald Trump also spoke about them. According to him, the sides "not just listened, but heard each other." At the talks, the sides confirmed their common mood for the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, for which special negotiating teams will be organized.
