Folk remedies for the treatment of acute respiratory viral infections attract by their availability and popularity, but many of them can be not only ineffective, but also dangerous to health. This was reported on February 18 by a therapist, occupational pathologist of JSC "Medicine" (clinic of Academician Roitberg) Svetlana Burnatskaya.

One of the common methods is drinking alcohol or wiping with vodka at high temperature. However, Burnatskaya explained that alcohol does not destroy viruses, but instead reduces immunity.

"Alcohol can cause dehydration, which only aggravates the condition. It is especially dangerous for children: alcohol, penetrating through the skin, can cause poisoning or allergic reaction, as well as dry the skin," - said the doctor in conversation with "Gazeta.Ru".

While many people use hot baths to relieve symptoms such as nasal congestion, it is not suitable for everyone. For people with cardiovascular disease, staying in a steam room can be dangerous, as high temperatures can lead to overheating of the body. Bathing procedures do not cure the infection, but only temporarily relieve the symptoms.

Breathing over potatoes can also be dangerous. Hot steam can cause burns to the respiratory tract, and temporary relief from nasal congestion does not solve the underlying problem of the disease.

In addition, aspirin is contraindicated for children with viral illnesses because it can cause Reye's syndrome, which damages the liver and brain.

Honey and lemon are also dangerous for babies under one year of age because of the risk of botulism, which can be caused by bacteria in the honey. Garlic and onions, although they have antiseptic properties, can irritate the stomach and cause digestive upset if consumed in excess.

Tea tree and eucalyptus oils can provoke allergic reactions, especially in children, and cause irritation of the skin and respiratory tract.

"Of folk methods, the most useful are bed rest, plenty of drinking and rest. Berry morsels diluted with water can help replenish fluid deficiencies and support the immune system. However, it is important to remember that any symptoms, especially in their prolonged manifestation, require diagnosis by a doctor", - summarized Burnatskaya.

Earlier, on February 10, in the Tula region because of the active circulation of influenza, stores were recommended to introduce a mask mode. Employees of retail outlets are advised to wear masks and change them every two to three hours. Also sanitization of stores should be carried out.
