US President Donald Trump called Venezuela an enemy of the United States, noting that he does not want US companies to continue buying oil from the Bolivarian Republic. The American leader said this to journalists at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate on February 18.

During the signing of the new decrees, Trump recalled that he imposed serious sanctions against Caracas in his first presidential term.

In addition, the US head of state noted that the country's previous administration decided to buy billions of dollars worth of oil from Venezuela.

"Why did they turn to the enemy and give them billions and billions of dollars?" - Trump asked.

He also stated that the United States has the necessary amounts of the resource. When asked by a reporter about continuing to purchase oil from Venezuela, Trump said that it was being considered at the moment.

Before that, on February 4, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto criticized U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his remarks about Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua.
