Ushakov says Russia-U.S. relations are developing uniquely

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said after talks with the US delegation in Riyadh on February 18 that relations between Moscow and Washington are going through a unique period of development.
"I want to say that just the whole nature of today's discussion sort of bore the imprint of the recent conversation between Russian [Vladimir Putin] and US [Donald Trump] presidents on the phone. And, of course, this is really, one could say, a unique development, given the overall situation - last week the presidents spoke, and then just a few days later, quite senior people from Moscow and Washington are already meeting and holding serious talks. This is already a kind of success," Ushakov added on air of theRossiya 1TV channel.
He added that during the talks with the United States, the Russian Federation outlined its principled positions on the situation in Ukraine, pointing to the need to eliminate the root causes of the conflict.
Ushakov also said that there has never been worse relations between the Russian Federation and the United States than before the arrival of the current US President Donald Trump.
According to the Russian presidential aide, there is now active work on the convergence of positions between the two countries, which opens up prospects for future agreements and improved relations.
Earlier in the day, talks between delegations from the Russian Federation and the US in Diyard concluded. The Russian side was represented by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Ushakov, and Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). On the US side were Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump's national security adviser Mike Waltz and the US leader's special envoy for the Middle East, Steven Whitkoff.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the talks between Russian Federation and the United States in Saudi Arabia useful. The delegations agreed to set up negotiating groups on Ukraine and restore diplomatic relations.
