Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, who arrived in New York to participate in the UN Security Council events, called the Russia-US talks in Saudi Arabia "the best news in recent days." He said this in an interview with Hungarian TV channel M-1 on February 18, TASS reported.

"We are very happy to see what is happening now in Saudi Arabia. We welcome the start of direct US-Russian negotiations, which are partly about resuming cooperation between the two countries and partly about establishing peace in Ukraine," the foreign minister said.

Siyarto emphasized that Russian-American cooperation is useful for the whole world if it is based on mutual respect. According to him, the events in Riyadh give hope for peace.

The minister also noted that Hungary does not support the participation of EU leaders in the peace talks on Ukraine, as they are in favor of continuing the conflict and supplying weapons to Kiev.

"Those who want to achieve peace sit at the negotiating table, while those who talk about war do not participate in the talks," Sijjarto noted.

In addition, he expressed regret that the UN failed to become an effective platform for the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict and demanded reforms in the organization to address security threats.

Earlier, on February 18, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó welcomed the start of talks between the delegations of the United States and Russia in Riyadh. At the same time, Szijjártó supported the decision not to invite representatives of the European Union to the meeting.

Earlier in the day, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said that the talks would be held in a bilateral format. He added that the participants are now facing the question of how to start a dialog on the Ukrainian issue. On February 13, US President Donald Trump announced a meeting between representatives of Russia and the USA in Saudi Arabia.
