In recent years, the UN has failed to fulfill its role as a platform for a peaceful settlement, therefore it should be reformed. This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on February 18 on the air of M1 TV channel.

"Unfortunately, the UN in recent years has failed to become a platform for peace. It is necessary to realize, the UN has not succeeded in resolving conflicts that carry challenges for global security," the Hungarian foreign minister was quoted as saying.

He noted that this is why serious reforms are needed in the UN.

Earlier, on February 6, Szijjártó had already suggested reforming the UN, starting with the unification of all anti-terrorist agencies into a single structure. According to him, the functions of counter-terrorism within the organization are scattered among different agencies. He recalled that Budapest is home to the UN's largest global counterterrorism center after New York, and negotiations are underway with the office of the UN Secretary General to move some of the headquarters functions there.

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order reassessing Washington's involvement in the UN and UNESCO. He said that the organization was failing to do its job.
