- Political analyst explains US interest in Germany by the desire to reduce Berlin's influence

The United States is closely monitoring the political situation in Germany, as its true interest is to downgrade the role of Berlin. Political scientist Yury Svetov told Izvestia on February 18.
He reminded that the US is not only today closely following the development of Germany. Thus, after the end of World War II, the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition (France, the USSR, Great Britain, and the United States), and especially the United States, were wary of the unification of Germany, fearing that such a state would be able to challenge the world again, including in economic terms.
In addition, he recalled that containing Germany was, among other things, one of NATO's goals. According to him, the US is constantly monitoring the political situation in the FRG and trying to weaken the country.
"No matter how [American leader Donald] Trump argues with [former US President Joe] Biden, Biden did what Trump wanted too. They dramatically worsened Germany's economic situation by imposing sanctions on Russian energy supplies," the political analyst said.
Germany's prosperity was based on cheap energy from Russia and trade with China, Svetov emphasized. Washington first forced Berlin to sever relations with Russia by forcing it to buy overpriced American liquefied natural gas (LNG), and then demanded that Germany reduce its dependence on China.
"Trump needs a manageable government inside Germany. A government that will not claim anything more than the development of its own country. Not for anything else. And in this respect, they believe that it is necessary to remove the parties from power, which, in general, fulfilled the liberal agenda, and which, in fact, were manipulated by Biden and his team," he said, adding that the Alternative for Germany party is quite suitable for the new US requirements, which is why it is so actively supported by Washington.
Parliamentary elections in Germany will be held on February 23.
The Trump administration has repeatedly expressed support for the AdG party. So, on February 14 at the Munich Security Conference, the Vice President of the United States JD Vance met with the leader of the German political force Alice Weidel. At the same time, he declined to speak with Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Olaf Scholz. He also criticized the European Union in his speech at the event.
In addition, the American entrepreneur and head of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Ilon Musk, often speaks in favor of the AdG. On February 1, the billionaire called the AdG the country's only hope, and last December he said that only this party could be the salvation for Germany.
On January 25, 2025, Musk said at an AdG campaign event that the German government was taking a totalitarian approach to limiting free speech in the country. The entrepreneur urged Germans to be proud of their nation and stop feeling guilty about the past. He also advised German citizens to support the party in the parliamentary elections.
