Psychologists from Azusa Pacific University in the USA have revealed the reason for a sudden feeling of disgust towards a partner. Experts Brian Collisson, Eliana Saunders and Chloe Yin published an article in the scientific publication Personality and Individual Differences (PID), in which they outlined their ideas and the results of the experiment.

The researchers hypothesized that an unpleasant reaction to, for example, the way a person brushes their hair or the way they look in shorts, could be related to something much deeper than meets the eye.

Psychologists noted that some evidence suggests that feelings of disgust, such as when a partner starts eating from a shared plate, may be triggered by a deep-seated fear of living with someone who recklessly consumes potentially dangerous food that could put others, including children, at risk.

Researchers recruited 125 adult volunteers who had previously experienced feelings of disgust toward a partner and asked them to observe the behavior of people on TikTok videos and report any similar emotions.

So, the researchers found that women who had often experienced disgust in the past also tended to experience it frequently in everyday life.

This, the researchers hypothesized, hints at the possibility of a lowered rejection threshold in some people. They also found a correlation of rejection with narcissism, suggesting that such people are more likely to perceive certain traits in others as flaws.

The research team suggested that it is likely that feeling disgusted by a partner is nothing more than a tool people use to identify incompatibility.
