Georgia will introduce a new foreign agents bill similar to the U.S. one

Georgian authorities will introduce a law on foreign agents, similar to the American one, to parliament this week. This was announced by Mamuka Mdinaradze, executive secretary of the Georgian Dream, on February 17.
"This week the bill will be initiated <...>. It will be word for word translated from the American one," RIA Novosti quoted Mdinaradze as saying.
He noted that the bill, similar to the American "FARA", is planned to be a literal analog of the current FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) law in the United States, which serves to prevent any speculation regarding the "Foreign Influence Transparency Act".
In addition, Mdinaradze said that Georgian Dream intends to return the article on "treason against the motherland" to the criminal code.
Earlier, on February 7, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili said that all those who fought against the law "On Transparency of Foreign Influence" (the law on foreign agents) adopted in the republic should apologize to its government and people.
On December 20, 2024, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the country's authorities are ready to discuss amendments to the law on foreign agents if they are justified what exactly is wrong with its norms and how they violate the principles of law.
On May 14, the Georgian Parliament adopted the law on foreign agents in the third and final reading.
