- A forecaster praised a physicist's idea to detonate a thermonuclear bomb to save nature

The idea expressed by American scientist Andrew Haverly to detonate a thermonuclear bomb to improve the climate and save nature can only cause a smile. This was stated by Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, on Monday, February 17.
Earlier, a scientist from the Rochester Institute of Technology(USA) Andrew Haverly proposed to explode the most powerful nuclear bomb to save nature, according to the website kp.ru. According to the specialist, the explosion of a thermonuclear device at the depth of the ocean will significantly delay the rise in temperature on Earth. Haverly calculated that basalt rocks crushed as a result of the explosion to the size of particles will be able to react with carbon dioxide and neutralize it, writes Life.Ru.
"Such proposals, of course, cause a smile, because this is interference in the Earth system - the ocean, river systems, atmosphere and so on. All these elements are now functioning, and quite adequately. We need very long, careful, verified physical experiments to give an answer about the impact of this or that factor," Vilfand emphasized in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.
He added that within the framework of climatology has been a lot of research on the issue of geoengineering, to study the effect of artificial influence on the geological system. Vilfand noted that he had not heard of the idea of exploding a thermonuclear bomb to improve the climatological situation within the scientific discourse.
Earlier in the day it became known that as of February 2025, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), discovered about 37.5 thousand objects approaching the Earth, of which about 2.5 thousand are considered potentially dangerous, writes Pravda.Ru.
One of these objects is 2024 YR4, which in 2032 may collide with Earth with a probability of 2.3%.
February 14, head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy IKI RAS Sergei Bogachev told RT that the possibility of calculating the probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 collision with Earth in 2032 is very small.
