An expert gave advice to schoolchildren on career planning in high school

Choosing a future career path is one of the most important decisions in a person's life. Ekaterina Bolotova, coordinator of the online career guidance festival "Day of Choice", told Izvestia on February 18.
"In order to approach the choice consciously, to begin with, it is worth paying attention to what the high school student is interested and inspired in everyday life. If the future professional solves mathematical problems even during breaks, most likely he will be interested in technical specialties. If he or she writes essays for the soul, you can pay attention to journalism, scriptwriting or, for example, copywriting," she said.
According to her, schoolchildren who like to participate in recitation contests, project workshops or music festivals are likely to have an inclination to creative professions related to public speaking.
She reminded that to learn more about career opportunities at open days at universities or at educational forums. At such events, schoolchildren are given the opportunity to be in the role of a programmer, financier, architect, doctor and other specialists, among others.
"Such test drives are a way to try themselves in different career scenarios, to immerse themselves in their specifics, to assess the pros and cons of each direction, and most importantly - to understand what really inspires and attracts, and what, on the contrary, does not arouse interest," Bolotova explained.
When a high school student has decided on his or her future profession, he or she can start building a plan for a future career. The expert suggested trying to perform a special exercise.
"[One should imagine that] a high school student gets the opportunity to choose any position and company to work for. What will he or she become? An employee of a large TV company, a specialist in the mining industry, or the owner of his own coffee shop? The formed idea of his future will be the starting point in building a career path," Bolotova said.
After that, it's worth studying job openings on specialized websites and finding out what skills are required to get a dream job.
Then, based on the required skills, a high school student should find training programs that train the appropriate specialists. Basic information is available on the websites of educational institutions, where one can find sections on career prospects, internships and partner companies.
"It is necessary to find out what exams are to be passed for admission to the desired direction, as well as the minimum passing scores for it. You should not limit yourself to one single option, it is better to choose several alternatives, because the results of the admission campaign are unpredictable. The requirements of universities should be compared with the current results of the USE samples and, if necessary, adjust the preparation strategy," the expert added.
In her opinion, it is possible to start gaining experience already in the 11th grade: to participate in internships, projects, case championships, to attend specialized circles. In the future, it can be used as an argument for employment.
Earlier, on February 11, the director of relations with the educational community of the exhibition "Entry Navigator" Alexander Khvostov told "Izvestia" that when choosing an educational path it is important to take into account the dreams and goals of the child. If he wants to master an applied specialty, then a reasonable solution would be to enter college. However, for those who aspire to a scientific career, higher education becomes an obligatory stage.
