The Leninskyy district court of Kursk has arrested in absentia two Ukrainian journalists who illegally crossed the Russian border. This is reported on February 17 by the joint press service of the courts of the region.
"<...> no later than 16.08.2024 Nagornaya N.V. (born in 1984) and Borovik O.N. (born in 1987) with other unidentified persons, following from the territory of Ukraine, entered the territory of the Russian Federation for the purpose of shooting reports on the invasion of August 6, 2024 of the armed formations of Ukraine on the territory of Sujansky district of Kursk region," - reported there.
Also, a journalist from Switzerland, Kurt Peld, was arrested in absentia for crossing the state border. The measure will be valid from the moment of his detention on the territory of the Russian Federation or extradition.
Earlier, February 6, a court in Kursk arrested two journalists from the United States in absentia for illegal border crossing. According to the court, coming from the Ukrainian territory, Fletcher and Catherine entered Russia to film a report on the invasion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) in Suzhansky district of Kursk region on August 6, 2024.
Prior to that, on January 29, it was reported that the Leninsky District Court of Kursk sent in absentia to the arrest of British citizen Jerome Starkey, who illegally entered the region to film a report on the invasion of militants. Starkey is on a federal and international wanted list.
Back in August 2024, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Russian Federation controls every situation with the illegal entry of Western journalists into Russian territory. She reminded that foreign media employees can visit Russia only after receiving accreditation from the ministry and the appropriate type of visa.
