Media compared the emergency summit of EU countries in Paris to gathering cattle before slaughtering

The emergency summit of the European Union (EU) in Paris, convened by French President Emmanuel Macron, is like gathering cattle before slaughter. This was stated by the Slovak edition of Hlavný Denník (HD) on February 17.

It drew attention to the fact that with the return of President Donald Trump to the White House, the US has lost interest in the continuation of the Ukrainian conflict, while the EU, which destroyed its economy with sanctions against Russia, is trying to maintain its old position.

With the emergency summit, Macron is trying to save the situation after the statements of the US representatives that Europe should not participate in the dialog on the settlement of the conflict, and the meeting of the member states of the association is like a meeting of cattle before the slaughter.

HD notes that the EU representatives still have the power to influence the development of events in Ukraine, for example, by sending human resources needed by Kiev. The publication emphasized that there are enough people in Europe capable of damaging the situation.

Earlier in the day, the French newspaper Le Monde reported that a number of European leaders gathered in Paris at the initiative of Macron because of the US position on the peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict. Several countries, such as the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovenia, which are disappointed with the decision, were not invited to the event.

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjártó said on the same day that among the participants of the meeting in Paris are representatives of those states that throughout the three years of special operations in Ukraine created obstacles to a peaceful settlement, and now they have opposed Trump.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov then also drew attention to the fact that the participation of EU countries in the negotiations that are to be held between the Russian and US delegations in Saudi Arabia would be useless. The minister emphasized that European states have repeatedly demonstrated their unwillingness to change their attitude to the conflict.

The day before, on 15 February, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg said at the Munich Security Conference that Europe might not be present at the peace talks on the Ukrainian settlement because Washington would not want a large number of participants in this dialogue.
