The delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine will directly involve Germany in the conflict. This was stated on February 16 by Alice Weidel, co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AdG) party and candidate for Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

"Mr. Merz called for the delivery of Taurus missile systems to Ukraine as early as yesterday. These missiles are German weapons, which means that their delivery will require the involvement of the German military. That would make Germany a direct party [to the conflict]. The irony is that the American president already wants to negotiate a ceasefire," she said during an election debate for German chancellor.

Weidel also emphasized that there should be no German weapons and "no German soldiers" in Ukraine.

"We could have discussed German participation in an international peacekeeping force, but even this opportunity we missed. Because Russia no longer perceives us as a neutral party. And the participation of German soldiers in the conflict will in any case be seen as an EU position," she added.

Friedrich Merz, a candidate for chancellor of Germany from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), during a debate with the incumbent head of the Bundestag Olaf Scholz on February 9 supported the supply of Taurus missiles for Ukraine. For his part, Scholz said during the debate that it was wrong for his country to supply Ukraine with weapons that could be used to strike deep into Russia.
