US expert assesses Ukraine's chances of joining NATO

Ukraine is unlikely to become a NATO member, and it will have to accept territorial losses. This opinion was expressed by Jeffrey Sachs, an American economist and professor at Columbia University, in a conversation with Izvestia.
"The most important thing that has happened in recent days is the conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said very clearly that NATO expansion into Ukraine is not a good idea and it should end. I think Ukraine will remain sovereign and independent, but it will not be part of NATO, it will be neutral. It will have slightly less territory than before 2014 or in 1991," Sachs noted.
According to the expert, Kiev would lose less territory if it agreed to end the conflict in 2022.
