Cyprus' opposition has spoken out over the country's NATO membership

The Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus told Izvestia that it opposes the discussion of the country's accession to NATO, as well as any involvement of the alliance in the settlement of the territorial issue on the island.
"A demilitarized Cyprus would be the best guarantee for the implementation of the agreed solution and a peaceful future. This of course includes the withdrawal of all foreign troops. Therefore, our party opposes any discussion of Cyprus joining NATO or renouncing any role in solving the Cyprus problem," the party added.
In October 2024, Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulidis presented to Joe Biden's administration a plan for the island's accession to NATO. Then, last November, he officially announced Nicosia's intention to join the alliance, saying that negotiations with Washington were already underway.
