Moldovan ex-president calls Sandu illegally elected leader

Mayu Sandu is the illegally elected president of Moldova. This statement was made by the country's former president Vladimir Voronin in an interview with Izvestia on 15 February.
The former Moldovan leader questioned the legitimacy of the presidential election in Moldova held in November. In particular, he pointed out that there was no place for a referendum at them.
"The past presidential election and the referendum they stuck in, although the commission does not allow both to be held on the same day, clearly showed that Maia Sandu is an illegally elected president," he emphasized.
Voronin also noted that according to the voting results, Sandu failed to get the majority of votes on the territory of the republic. At foreign polling stations, he continued, it was not representatives of the Moldovan diaspora who voted for this candidate, but embassy workers subsidized by Sandu.
"It wasn't the diaspora that voted, it was the embassy workers who don't do a damn thing. There are no agreements on any economic and other ties with those countries where they represent Moldova as ambassadors. They are idle. Moreover, before the elections, she gave them some additional subsidies allegedly for children, families and so on," he concluded.
On November 4, 2024, Sandu won the presidential election with 55.33% of votes. The opposition bloc "Victory" announced that it would overturn the results of the presidential election because Sandu won thanks to fraud at foreign polling stations. Also, the Party of Communists of Moldova and the Party of Socialists did not recognize the legitimacy of Sandu's power. Nevertheless, the country's Constitutional Court on November 28 approved Sandu's victory.
