After the election, Germany may declare a state of emergency (SEZ) as it will be necessary to loosen the debt brake (a restriction preventing the cabinet from taking on too much debt) in order to finance Ukraine. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 15.

He noted that a military conflict in the center of Europe is an emergency situation.

"I am sure that after the elections there will be a majority in favor of this (declaring a state of emergency. - Ed.)," he said.

Scholz explained that the reform of the debt brake is necessary to mobilize further support.

Earlier, on February 14, Scholz said that the actions of the administration of U.S. leader Donald Trump regarding the conflict in Ukraine jeopardize Germany's security. According to him, the Bundestag needs to make a decision as soon as possible to make additional spending on support for Ukraine outside the federal budget possible. He explained the decision with a budget emergency.
