Over the past three years, the West has allocated about €267bn in aid to Ukraine, the Institute for the World Economy (IfW) website has published on 14 February.

It is specified that about €130bn is military aid, €118bn is financial support, and the remaining €19bn is humanitarian aid.

At the same time, the institute noted the small size of aid relative to the GDP of Western countries: Germany, the UK allocated less than 0.2% per year, and France, Italy or Spain - about 0.1%.

"If you look at the state budgets of most European countries, aid to Ukraine over the past three years looks more like a small political 'pet project' rather than a major fiscal effort," stressed Christoph Trebesch, head of the Ukraine Support Tracker project at IfW.

However, according to the institute, Europe has overtaken the United States in terms of aid to Ukraine. Thus, European countries in total, Europe allocated €62 billion of military aid and €70 billion of financial and humanitarian, while the United States - €64 billion of military allocations and €50 billion of financial and humanitarian.

"With President Trump back in office, US military aid is likely to stagnate again. As a result, European governments will be forced to step up their efforts and fill the large gap left by the US," Trebesch added.

On the same day, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys said that aid to Ukraine was the reason for the emptying of European reserves. He also noted that Europe was questioning the lack of defense industry production build-up and stressed the need to replenish reserves.
