Zelensky admits US reluctance to see Ukraine in NATO

The US authorities have never promised Kiev an invitation to NATO. The corresponding statement was made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired on May 20, 2024) on Friday, February 14, speaking at the Munich Security Conference.
"Let's be honest, the US never saw us in NATO, they only talked about it. At the level of [former] US President [Joe Biden], I never heard during my term as president that we would be in NATO. Never," he said.
The 61st Annual Security Conference takes place in Munich from February 14-16, 2025.
Also on Feb. 14, Zelensky said that if Ukraine does not join NATO, it will need an army"capable of defending" the country. According to the Ukrainian leader, Kiev needs NATO weapons and an army of 1.5 million people.
On February 13, US leader Donald Trump called the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO inexpedient. In this way, the United States president commented on the statement by the country's Defence Minister Pete Hegseth that Kiev's joining the North Atlantic alliance was unlikely.
