The West could have prevented the conflict in Ukraine 24 hours before it started if it had refused to admit the country to NATO. This was reported by the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet on 14 February.

It is noted that this did not happen because of the USA's desire to start a conflict with Russia.

As indicated in the publication, Washington's aggressive approach to the Ukrainian issue changed only with the arrival of Donald Trump to power. The newspaper drew attention to the fact that the American president wants peace and at the same time seeks to make Kiev pay for military action with rare earth metals. Confronting China and strengthening the US economy are more important to Trump than a conflict with Russia, Hürriyet added.

On February 13, the U.S. president named the West's desire to pull Ukraine into NATO as one of the reasons for the start of the Russian special operation. In his opinion, Moscow simply could not do otherwise. At the same time, Kiev perfectly understood the unacceptability of its membership in the alliance for Russia, Trump noted. Before that, he also called Kiev's entry into the bloc inexpedient.

On the same day, the deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada committee on national security and defense and head of the country's permanent delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Yegor Chernev, said that Ukraine had to pay a high price for possible membership in the military alliance. In his opinion, the West should not have promised Ukraine to join the bloc if it was not feasible from the start.
