Germany reports rapid emptying of gas storage facilities

Gas reserves in German gas storages are being used up faster than usual. This was reported by the publication Focus on February 14.
According to official data, on February 5, large natural gas storage facilities in Germany were filled to 46.97%, which is the worst result since 2017.
According to the publication, in 2022-2024, the level of accumulation of natural gas in storage facilities for this period was more than 70%, and from 2017 to 2021, the figure fell to about 54%.
Experts believe that, first of all, the growth in gas consumption is associated with a 14% drop in gas imports compared to last year. Thus, imports from Belgium dropped by about 50%, while the purchase of natural gas from Russia practically stopped after the termination of supplies through Ukraine on January 1.
Experts warn that if the trend continues, the amount of gas in storage will drop to 30-40% by the end of March.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on February 12 that the European Union (EU) was preparing new anti-Russian sanctions amid the difficult situation of its own economy. Prices for Russian gas have risen sharply in European countries, although earlier the resource provided economic growth of the association states, in particular Germany, the Russian Foreign Minister said.
